In our class, we just started reading "Touching Spirit Bear" by Ben Mikaelsen. It is a good book, but it is a little- graphic. In chapter 1, it shows a troubled boy named Cole. Cole has gone to detention centres and beat up a kid named Peter Driscal. His dad is an alcoholic and beats him, while his mom is Ms. Perfect who drinks as well. After Cole beats up the kid, Peter Driscal, he gets in more trouble then he is already in. He gets sent to a detention centre and a guard from Minneapolis, Garvey, always checks on him. Garvey is a nice guy but I think the reason Garvey checks on Cole so much is because he understood Cole because he had parents like that. In chapter 1, it talks about Cole getting banished to an empty island in Alaska. Cole has flashbacks of Garvey visiting him and telling him about something called a "Circle Justice Meeting". It would get him out of jail and help him. Cole would have to sign a paper and everyone who wanted to come could come. Cole decides to go there and pretend to be sorry so he can get out of that and jail. In chapter 2 Cole is getting taken to the island and he is not very happy. When Garvey and Edwin, the two that take him there, leave after dropping Cole off, Cole gets pretty mad. Although Garvey and Edwin had built a hut for Cole and gave him minimal supplies, Garvey also gave him a blanket that has been passed down in his family called an at.oow.ow, but since Cole is angry, in chapter 3, he lights the hut on fire. He burns all his supplies and tries to throw the at.oow.ow in there but it doesn't burn for some reason. After all that, in chapter 4, Cole tries to escape the island by swimming away. In chapter 5, Cole has to swim back because he gets cold and tired, he also realizes that he is swimming against the current and makes a fire and wraps himself in the at.oow to keep warm. Cole also has flashbacks of circle justice when his dad lied about beating him. After that, in chapter 6 Cole is sitting by the fire and sees spirit bear, something that Edwin warned him about. Cole yells at it and points a knife at it but it doesn't flinch. All of a sudden the bear just disappeared. Once again in chapter 7, Cole plans his escape. He makes sure he is nourished. He cooks a fish and eats it, but in the end of the chapter, Cole sees the spirit bear but this time, he grabs a spear and gets close to it so it cant disappear again. In chapter 8, Cole gets ATTACKED by the bear. His leg is all gnarled, his bone in his arm is sticking out, his lungs snapped and his pelvis cracked. As well as all that, he has cuts all over. That is all we have read so far and it is a good book!
